Summit one of East Africa’s oldest volcanoes while discovering breathtaking landscapes and rich mountain cultures.
Discover the untamed beauty of eastern Uganda on this 6 Days Mount Elgon National Park Hiking Adventure. Perfect for nature lovers and trekking enthusiasts, this expedition takes you to the summit of Wagagai Peak (4,321 metres) via the famous Sasa Trail before descending through the spectacular Piswa Trail.
Mount Elgon is one of Africa’s oldest extinct volcanoes, believed to have first erupted over 24 million years ago. Although erosion has reduced its height over millions of years, it remains the fourth-highest mountain in East Africa and boasts one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas.
Throughout the journey, you’ll hike through lush montane forests, bamboo zones, moorlands, giant lobelia fields, dramatic cliffs, caves, waterfalls, hot springs, and expansive alpine landscapes while encountering diverse wildlife and learning about the fascinating traditions of the Bagisu and Sabiny people.
The trek is considered moderate to challenging. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, but it is less technical than climbing Mount Rwenzori or Kilimanjaro.
The highest point is Wagagai Peak, standing at 4,321 metres above sea level.
You may encounter forest monkeys, small antelopes, buffaloes, elephants, numerous bird species, and unique alpine vegetation throughout the trek.
Bring sturdy hiking boots, waterproof clothing, warm layers, gloves, a hat, sunscreen, trekking poles (optional), insect repellent, a daypack, and a reusable water bottle.
