Mount Elgon is one of Africa’s oldest extinct volcanoes, believed to have first erupted over 24 million years ago. Although erosion has reduced its height over millions of years, it remains the fourth-highest mountain in East Africa and boasts one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas.

Throughout the journey, you’ll hike through lush montane forests, bamboo zones, moorlands, giant lobelia fields, dramatic cliffs, caves, waterfalls, hot springs, and expansive alpine landscapes while encountering diverse wildlife and learning about the fascinating traditions of the Bagisu and Sabiny people.

The trek is considered moderate to challenging. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, but it is less technical than climbing Mount Rwenzori or Kilimanjaro.

The highest point is Wagagai Peak, standing at 4,321 metres above sea level.

You may encounter forest monkeys, small antelopes, buffaloes, elephants, numerous bird species, and unique alpine vegetation throughout the trek.

Bring sturdy hiking boots, waterproof clothing, warm layers, gloves, a hat, sunscreen, trekking poles (optional), insect repellent, a daypack, and a reusable water bottle.

Journey Through Uganda’s Ancient Volcanic Highlands

Follow one of Uganda’s most spectacular mountain routes as you climb through forests, caves, cliffs, volcanic landscapes, and alpine vegetation to the summit of Mount Elgon before descending through breathtaking scenery.

Day 1: Kampala to Mbale

Your adventure begins with an early morning departure from Kampala for eastern Uganda. Enjoy a scenic drive through lush countryside, crossing the mighty River Nile in Jinja before continuing to Mbale, the gateway to Mount Elgon National Park.

Along the journey, admire beautiful landscapes, rural communities, and rolling hills before arriving in Mbale for relaxation and overnight.

Day 2: Sasa Trail to Mude Cave Camp

The trail climbs steadily through farmland, lush forests and the spectacular Mudange Cliffs before reaching Mude Cave Camp, where you’ll enjoy breathtaking mountain scenery and your first overnight on the mountain.

Day 3: Summit Wagagai Peak
